Addictions now include message boards

June 18th, 2008

There is a story about a New York man who was found dead at his computer, apparently the victim of trying to keep up with too many professional forums. Childress H. Wanamaker, 54, an account executive at a New York-based new media company, died of starvation. His emaciated body was found by his wife of 26 years, who had been bringing him meals on plastic trays for weeks, but he never took the time to eat them!

Luckily, like for all addictions, a superb programme is available at considerable savings in beautiful Thailand on the banks of the River Kwai. Tailor-made or 28 days residential care run by Westerners and the great thing is that you can supplement the programme with yoga etc. Where else can you get better and ride an elephant!! www.restoring-hope.com

Parents of children with Autism short-changed on Oprah Show

June 2nd, 2008

A recent Oprah show seen here in Asia featured three parents of Autistic children and a few specialists of one sort or another. We saw the grief of parents faced with the challenges of raising an autistic child and learned that no two children are exactly the same - the common factor being that to varying degrees autism affects speech/language development, social interactions and behavior.

The spectrum of disorders puts parents into the sad situation of finding themselves on a treadmill of therapists - speech, occupational and behavioral - and medications, of course, and it never stops! The cost over many years is truly horrific and the whole family rotates around the needs of the suffering child.

Sadly, when it came to the possible causes we heard again about vaccines and various other theories, but the truth is no-one knows. It is likely that there is a genetic predisposition plus an environmental trigger, but the mechanism is not known.

Is there any help available? YES!!! - and no mention was made of it on the show. Many children have benefited from stem cell therapy. It’s early days yet in this exciting science but stem cells from a variety of sources have been found to make significant differences and improvements in speech, social behavior and some of the more florid traits autistic children sometimes display.

How sad that no mention was made of treatment. If a parent heard their child speak and relate better they would be overjoyed. There is hope - realistic hope of improvement and such help is available right now. Stem cells are, without any doubt, the future of medicine. They are safe and effective and at the very worst cannot possibly harm the child.
